2 CONTRASTING EXAMPLES OF CURRICULUM VITAE (CV)

THE CONTENTS OF THIS PAGE

Important Note:

  • Your CV should be on one A4 page only

  • A letter of application should accompany your CV and you can add relevant information, which you could not include on the CV, e.g. availability, etc.  The letter of application must not be more than one A4 sheet; it can be long, or short.

  • Your date of birth is not often necessary.

  • Many employers ignore applications from older applicants (women in particular) if they know their date of birth.  I recommend you leave out your date of birth, unless specifically requested.

  • Younger women may benefit from including their age.

  • Please note that vocabulary explanations are given at the bottom of this page

AN EXAMPLE OF THE LAYOUT & THINGS TO INCLUDE ON A CONVENTIONAL CV

Note:  This type of CV is usually most suitable for:

  • employers who are not young & prefer traditional ways of doing things

  • employers who are staid & unadventurous, offering work in a serious professional environment, e.g. legal, financial, official, etc.

  • staid educational institutions

  • government, or local government departments

  • applicants who have an impressive range of qualifications

  • applicants who have the required number of qualifications

(Please assume the following layout is on an A4 sheet of paper)

AN EXAMPLE OF THE LAYOUT & WORDING OF A SKILLS-BASED CV

(ideal for multi-dimensional applicants without many formal qualifications)

Note:  Many employers are not really interested in your academic & employment history in detail, as listed on a formal, conventional CV;  they are more interested in knowing what  experience you have and what skills you have developed. The following CV minimises your history and concentrates on your qualities and skills.  This type of CV is ideal:

  • for applications for a position requiring a dynamic personality

  • for applicants, who do not have many qualifications, but who are very experienced

  • for applicants wishing to apply for a position for which they have no experience or qualifications, but who would like to move into a new field of work

  • to companies which are forward-looking

  • to small companies

(Please assume this whole box is an A4 sheet of paper)
