THE CONTENTS OF THIS PAGE

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXERCISES 1 & 2

For presentation and/or simple practice of language points:

  • Play the song at a suitable speed, so students may listen and complete the blanks

For testing purposes, or revision practice at a higher level:

  • Instruct students to complete the blanks first, then to listen to the song to check their answers

  • Make this exercise easier, if necessary, by informing students where the infinitives, or tenses, should be used

Discussion/Composition Suggestions

  • Preparation:    Prepare a list of suitable vocabulary, if necessary

  • Discussion:    As many students are reluctant to speak out initially, begin with pairwork, then combine pairs for feedback, then class discussion

  • Composition:  This can be set for homework, with/without prior discussion

  • Roleplay:        Introduce this as the next stage, after discussion, or composition, in order to revise and reinforce knowledge of the new vocabulary

N.B.:  There are grammatical errors in the lyrics of this song;  however, adaptations have been made, so it can still be useful to introduce the language for which practice has been provided in exercises 1 & 2

IF THERE'S ANY JUSTICE IN THE WORLD

(sung by Lemar)

He would be alone (and) I would be with you yeah.

When you ……………….., don’t let me down,

<>()<>

‘Coz there……………….. nothing to be certain (of) in my life

And you……………….. a thousand times,

There………………..not much justice in the world.

If there’s any justice in your heart,

Your love‘s really changed; ……………….. it too hard? oh no.

Why ……………….. you ……………….. how it ………………..,

<>()<>

Not to give a damn for anyone but me,yeah?

I can’t believe, you’d me deceive

Changing memories from true to fantasy.

When there……………….. nothing left but tears

And there……………….. not much justice in the world.

<>()<>

Just because he……………….. around your finger,

……………….. yourself with dreams that might appear, oh.

Every time you ……………….. and ……………….. your feelings,

The truth ……………….. out there somewhere;

It……………….. in the wind. Ohh

When you ……………….., don’t let me down,

‘Coz there……………….. nothing to be certain in my life

 And ……………….. a thousand times,

There……………….. not much justice in the world. No

Important Language Note:  'If there’s any justice in the world is grammatically wrong, unless it is followed by the present tense (Zero Conditional).  It should be 'If there WERE any justice in the world, you would be my baby'. Many native speakers of English use the wrong form, oblivious to their error.
