| Although preparation is time-consuming, it is
worthwhile. Once the work has
been done, you will have ready-made lessons which you can use again and again.

INSTRUCTIONS BY BIBI BAXTER FOR CREATING WORKSHEETS
FOR USE WITH SONGS
LISTENING EXERCISES
|
|
1. Decide what you want to teach: Grammar? Vocabulary? Constructions? Sequencing? Intonation? etc.
2. Choose a suitable song with lyrics which contains the language
points you require.
3. Then set to work, as follows:-
-
Create GAPPED exercises to practice the
following:-
-
Vocabulary
(nouns, adjectives, idioms, phrasal verbs, etc)
-
Grammar/constructions
(tenses, articles, conditionals,
prepositions,gerund v infinitive, etc) (example:
folk song)
(Example:
Elvis Presley Song)
-
Intonation
(stressed v unstressed syllables)
|
-
SUGGESTION-1:
divide the
lyrics so they may be cut into separate pieces of paper (Example:
Rod Stewart)
-
SUGGESTION-2:
create a 'out of order' list of the lyrics with a space on each line for the 'order' to be written
(Example:
Rod Stewart)
|
|
FURTHER PRACTICE
|
-
In order to create a dialogue, a
roleplay, a discussion, or a composition, use the theme from
the lyrics. Sometimes, the music might be special in some way,
or the instruments used.
-
For milling or matching exercises,
use a grammatical construction from the lyrics (for
example: conditional)
-
For a gapped exercise, a
vocabulary game, or a writing exercise, use the vocabulary from the
lyrics.
-
For comprehension practice, (Example:
folksong - paraphrasing).
Alternatively,
create 3 or 4 summaries and ask students to choose which summary is
most accurate.
