Special Note for tutors:  
  • The following song may shock you, but it will interest and delight your students;  however, they may seem a little dismayed when at first they think it is too difficult.  In fact, it is so repetitive, it is not too challenging at all, so encourage them to persevere.
  • The spoken introduction in Tubthumper comes from the film :"Brassed Off", the story of which is summarised as follows:-      

"Economics and music are the twin focal points of this comedy/drama about a community in crisis. The small British town of Grimley has long been dominated by a coal mine where most of the men work, and the town's greatest source of pride is the Grimley Colliery Band, a brass ensemble that's won a number of nationwide competitions. Danny (Pete Postlewaite) is a retired miner in poor health who directs the band."   Thanks to Mike for this information.

EXERCISE-2

PEDAGOGIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR TUTORS

PRACTICE:  Listening

ACTIVITY:  Sequencing

LEVEL:  Pre-intermediate to upper-Intermediate

INSTRUCTIONS: 

-Cut the following lyrics into strips

-If possible allow one set of lyrics per pair of students

-Instruct your students to listen to the music and put the strips in order.  (Students can make the task easier by grouping all the phrases which are identical)

-Play the song according to the level of your students.  (ie: for struggling students, play the song line by line, make it a little more difficult by playing the song continuously and stopping only when requested, make it a much more difficult by playing it continuously.)  

For upper-intermediate students, play the song first, then instruct them to try and arrange the lyric strips from memory before listening to the song.

EXERCISE-2

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS

LEVEL:  Pre-intermediate to Intermediate 

PRACTICE:  Sequencing

LEVEL:  Pre-intermediate to upper-intermediate

INSTRUCTIONS: 

-Cut the following lyrics into strips

-Work on your own, or with a friend

-Make the task EASIER for yourself by grouping all the phrases which are identical.

-Listen to the music and put the strips in order

-Play the song according to your level, (ie: play the song line by line, or make it a little more difficult by playing the song continuously and stopping only when you necessary, or make it a much more difficult by playing it continuously.)  

Upper-intermediate students should play the song first, then try and arrange the lyric strips from memory before listening to the song.
