  • EXERCISE:                   1

  • LEVEL:                         Intermediate +

  • ACTIVITY:                     Dictation (lyrics)

  • SKILLS:                        Listening, Writing

INSTRUCTIONS:-

  •  This song is sung quite fast, thereby making the exercise quite difficult.  Make it a class exercise which becomes a combined effort, with students contributing whatever they can.  (The worksheet has been laid out in letter form with indented paragraphs to make it look more authentic.)

  • Make this exercise simpler by minimising the amount to which students must listen, and/or by giving them the first word of the line.

Sentences for Dictation

  l.        Thank you for your letter;  your ideas sound feasible, but we would like more details.
  2.       Unfortunately, we find it necessary to write to you in respect of your letter.
  3.       Obviously, we cannot commit ourselves at this stage.
  4.       We were pleased to receive your letter.
  5.       The content of your book would be inappropriate for a quality publishing firm such as ours.
  6.       We are obviously eager to receive the manuscript.
  7.       We are sure a less particular publisher would be willing to accommodate your wish to see
            your work in paperback form.
  8.       Have you completed the manuscript, or are you still working on it?
  9.       The subject matter could not be more appropriate.
1O.       Whatever the situation, we would require a synopsis before making a final decision.
11.        If you care to contact us in the near future, we can arrange to have contracts drawn up without further delay.
12.        At your request, we will furnish you with further details of such publishers.
