GENERAL
INFORMATION
"The Isle of Thanet"
Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs are seaside resorts
situated on a peninsular called The Isle of Thanet; so-called,
because it used to be separated from the mainland by the River Wantsum.
It is renowned for being one of the few places in Britain from
where one can see the sun both rise and set upon the sea.
In additional it is an area of archaeological interest.
POSITION
The Isle of Thanet is only about 15 miles from
Canterbury and
20 miles from Dover and
Folkestone where reasonably-priced trips are
available to France and Belgium via ferry, catamaran, hovercraft,
jetfoil, or train. Fred
Olsen cruises to the Mediterranean are also run from Dover. France
is approximately 21 miles across the North Sea from Margate.
