THE SHADOW KILLERS

 The sky is bitter yellow,
Trees are seething, raining.
Heavy tears are falling,
Catching the cobbles,
Flickering, flashing yellow.

Cars dashing, soaking.
The shadows glisten briefly,
Seeping into silence,
Torn by the vehicle's violence.

Then the sigh of acceptance
'Til a pool of light once more,
Floods the sleeping shadows,
Soaks the sponge hedges,
Rains upon the doorways.

Searchlights flashing by, staring
Empty eyes, rushing, humming, hissing past,
Embers fading fast.

SILENT PLEAS

Silence.

Clock ticking,
Up and down,
In and out,
Breathing.

Ears hissing,
Surging,
Blinking,
Swallowing
The night.

Blood coursing,
Cars throbbing,
House creaking,
And then,
Finally

Silence

HIGH FINANCE

I'd like to buy a Hi-Fi.
Certainly - what are you looking for?
Well, it has to be this size (hands outstretched)
And at least thirty watts.
With an equaliser
And a remote.

That one looks nice.
Yes, the buttons light up -
Would you like to hear it?
Why?

WITCH WAY UP

She trembled slightly as we approached the surgery door
The witch doctor was in.

She has a crystal, and with it, she says,
She can hear voices when no one is there.
Yes, nodded the doctor, she's a witch.
But it's a radio! she cried.

She has a glass bulb, she says she
Can see things in distant lands.
Definitely a witch, murmured the doctor.
But it's only TV! she protested.

She has a web, she says she
Can send messages and images around the world.
She is a dangerous witch, exclaimed the doctor.
But it's only the internet! she cried.

She says she can show you these things,
That there's no magic about them, that you could ...
Enough!  She's said quite enough already,
Cried the doctor.

The doctor handed over the prescription.
What does it say? she asked
As we left the surgery.
Burn the witch.

HYDE-DOUBT

Over the edge of reason
Into the heart of darkness.

They said it was unreasonable,
Accusations offensive,
Simply unbelievable.

Lies can be believable
Comfortable, plausible, acceptable.
Lies can be anything you want them to be.
Truth may be outrageous, offensive, unbelievable
But truth can only be truth.

Make it unreasonable enough and few can perceive it
Unbelievable enough and no one will believe it
You could get away with murder
Just don't make sense.

TURBULENCE

Golden lace of light
Rivulets streaming through darkening skies
Human volcanoes glistening, shimmering
Human constellations in the night sky below
Chained together by a galaxy of cars
Rushing onward in torrents
Plunging into the city lights
Into a pool of turmoil
Then stagnant water
Meandering down the window
Is there movement?
Or a tear upon a static scene
Lit red in frustration?
We wheel left
The whirlpool fades below us
Lights mopped up by cloud
Failing fast

THE INFERNAL OPTIMIST

Believers see heaven
Doubters see hell
Optimists see what could be
Pessimists see what is
Mad, bad and sad

Happiness is hope
Peace in our time
Sadness is despair
Hopeless is cognitive silence
The sound of silence

But some see both
Sides now
War and peace
Love and hate
Dreams and despair
Reality and illusion

But which is real?
And what is illusion?
Do we need to decide?
Is it enough to believe?
Is it enough to achieve?

Love and hate
Dreams and nightmares
Yes and no
Caring and trapping
Good and bad
Happy and sad
Truth and lies
Saints and spies

Words and words
Achieve what?
Believe what?
So, what?
Stop thinking

Start living
Don’t think
Feel
