Joshua:      I’m not going to let it worry me.  I’ve even decided to go to France tomorrow.  Do you want to come with me?

Agatha:       Sorry, I can’t go, but I think Albert might;  he’s only just heard the news from Horace.  Anyway, I’ll ask him when I see him tonight.

Joshua:       Poor old Albert, tell him he can phone me if he wants to talk about it.

 EXERCISE 4

EXERCISE:  4
LEVEL:  Intermediate +
ACTIVITIES:      Milling
PRACTICE:         Vocabulary & Phrases for the following functions:-
  • Swearing someone to secrecy
  • Confiding in someone
  • Revealing a secret
  • Betraying a confidence

(pedagogic ideas by Bibi)

INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Read conversations 1 & 2 in exercise 3 again.
  2. Practice saying them with your neighbour.
  3. Make a list of the phrases used.
  4. Using the phrases in those conversations, circulate and swear classmates to secrecy, before telling them your secrets.
  5. Make notes as you go on the form provided.
  6. Next, repeat  instructions 1-4, but this time for conversations 3 & 4
NOTE:  When practising speech, it is necessary to have the right intonation, level of voice and attitude.  You may find the following useful.
  • SWEARING SOMEONE TO SECRECY:  Said with a worried, yet hopeful voice.  The one with the secret wants to tell, so is hopeful that the listener will promise to keep the secret.
  • CONFIDING IN SOMEONE:  Secrets are usually whispered, or told in a low voice, so others cannot hear.
  • REVEALING A SECRET:  Said furtively, if afraid of being overheard, or said with an air of importance by someone who enjoys betraying a confidence.

For students, who are working alone, the following sytem will prove useful:

  • Complete the gaps
  • Record the conversations, using different voices for each character and the correct type of voice for the function.  (see above)
